Odyssey of Labour [05/2009]

"Odyssey of Labour" is an utopian project realized in Orel city in an abandoned factory. Since the project is focused on the problem of labour and labour process estrangement, labour also becomes its main method. In this project I aimed to overcome the inevitable labour estrangement by refusing to use any preset instruments of labour. I constructed instruments of labour by myself and then used them myself to construct new ones.

First, I collected some waste material found at the factory and built a cart out of it. Then I used this cart to collect and carry some more waste material that I needed to construct a table. When the table was constructed, I used it as a workbench, which I needed to construct a huge constructivist ladder. Then I wrote a banner, using the table as a necessary support. Finally I climb the ladder and fixed this banner to the ceiling. The banner quotes one of the situationists’ slogans: “Never Work”.

This 7-day labour project is represented in form of a 2-hour video, which scrupulously shows every detail of the production process.
