Test Of Taste [05/2014]

Figure of taste is a contradictory but important concept for aesthetic and political subjectification. Firstly, taste can be understood as an ability to make judgement, and consequently to decide on the qualities of things. In this respect it is connected with the act of selecting, such as consumption or electoral politics. Secondly, possession of taste, and thus ability to judge, does not guarantee a possibility to create. Here one can find a link to partial agency like, for example, in representative democracy (politics through voting) or charity activity (art through donation). In the times of neoliberal economic subject, figure of taste is approximate to an activity of self-creation via conducting a series of enlightened choices, thus edifying the image of a subject as free producer/consumer.
Performance Test Of Taste proposes a "desubjectification machine" as a method of social inquiry, which does not create particular characters or social groups. This "social machine" operates by the process of collective voting, colours, abstract forms and becoming-of-a-statistic-landscape.
